Crib Mattresses - Most Contain Harmful Phthalates

The crib mattress that you choose for your baby should not contain phthalate chemicals.  Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are potentially toxic.  They are considered more harmful for infants since they are still developing and growing.  Studies on phthalates indicate they may cause an increased risk of asthma, allergies, and disrupt the reproductive development of babies.

Phthalates have been added to traditional baby mattresses for decades.  Mattress manufacturers have been adding phthalates to PVC plastics in order to create a flexible and soft waterproof vinyl cover for baby mattresses.  The hazard is created when phthalates often leach or gas out from the plastic mattress covers into the surrounding air.

Babies may spend at least 10 hours on their crib mattress every single day.  This may continue for at least the first two years of a baby's life, which are also the critical stages for healthy development.  Considering how close a baby will sleep to the mattress cover, combined with duration, the potential for high exposure to phthalates is great.  

In 2004, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) informed baby mattress manufacturers that they have the option of voluntarily eliminating phthalates from their mattresses.  However, these companies did not listen.  Since the removal of phthalates from their mattresses, would have resulted in a very hard and unusable sleeping surface.  

Just recently, on February 10, 2009 the CPSC came up with new guidelines.  These guidelines were created to minimize the use of six types of major phthalates (over 0.1%) in the production of mattresses for babies.  In my opinion, these guidelines are simply not good enough.  Especially since the CPSC has not completely prohibited phthalates in baby mattress production.  But they certainly should, since scientific studies have proven the toxicity of these chemicals.  One of my main concerns is whether manufacturers will actually follow these guidelines and how well will they be enforced.  

My advice for parents is not to wait around for mattress manufacturers to change their production habits.  I recommend they avoid investing in any mattress that may contain even slight traces of phthalates.  The risks are considerable.  The only viable solution that I can think of is to invest in a 100% certified organic crib mattress.  Organic mattresses are produced without the addition of harmful chemical additives or toxins.       

Phthalates should be banned from all baby products.  The well-being of our newborn babies should not be compromised due to convenience or old manufacturing practices.  Instead of ignoring the issue at hand, companies should do everything they possibly can to find a safe replacement for phthalates in the production of  baby mattresses.  Our precious babies cannot afford to be exposed to these toxic chemicals, especially when they are so vulnerable while peacefully sleeping on their crib mattress.

Disney Wall Stickers Influence the Imagination

Through many of my acquaintances I have yet to encounter a living human being that does not have a favorite Disney movie or character in their hearts. Just seeing an advertisement or stuffed animal can bring a flood of memories to ones soul. Childhood can't be recreated but bits and pieces are forever embedded in our minds. As parents we can somewhat relive these precious moments from our past through our off springs. We can accomplish this simply by creating a comforting and colorful safe haven for our little ones. At the same time their little minds will start to absorb and store memories of their own.

Growing up I can remember listening to an album of 101 Dalmatians over and over again. I kept recreating the movie with songs and the vivid pictures that were included in the album. So as no surprise, I longed to bring this vision to my baby's room. This was my memory not hers so I needed some kind of decor that was not permanent. Wallpaper or painting the walls was not an option. What was necessary would be a material that could be removed easily or could change and grow with my child. It still had to look professional and be an outlet for my baby's imagination.

What I finally decided on for my daughters room was four different themes that all blended nicely. On the wall that was over her crib I choose a princess theme. The Disney characters were comprised of Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid. There were also stickers of tiny creatures and butterflies and birds. On the wall opposite her crib was Bugs bunny, Mickey Mouse and Tweety Pie. They seemed to pop out from the wall. There was also a button on Bugs Bunny nose when pushed it played a tune.

On the two remaining walls was my favorite the dog theme. One wall was composed of 101 Dalmatians and the other was from the movie the Lady and the Tramp. After all we are proud owners of a Cocker Spaniel.

The hardest part of the entire project was deciding on the cast of characters to place on the walls. The actual time it took to hang was one hour for the entire job. When anyone comes to see my new bundle of joy, they seem to first comment on the Disney wall stickers. I guess no matter how old we get, we all love Disney.

Five Baby Nursery Furniture Essentials

After all the ups and downs of birthing, feeding, changing, dressing and generally pampering four precious babies, I think I can safely say that I know what works, and what doesn't, in terms of organizing your baby nursery on a budget.

There are many baby nursery furniture options available on the market today. Most are not necessary, however. In my opinion, you only really need five items of furniture for your baby nursery. (If you do not have a closet in your baby nursery, you may need to add an armoire to the list.)

Somewhere to sleep -- A baby crib.

You have many choices here, from a straight forward standard baby crib to a luxurious round or fantasy carriage crib. If you have a few dollars to spare, convertible baby cribs are great value for money.

No matter which baby crib you decide upon, remember to take baby crib safety into account. Current baby crib safety guidelines are far more stringent than in the past. For this reason, the use of a second hand baby crib is not recommended.

Somewhere to change, dress and mess with baby -- A baby changing table.

Some people will tell you to go without this item and to change your baby in the crib. If you have chosen a baby crib with a drop down side rail this is entirely possible to do. However, you'll probably end up with backache.

If you do decide to purchase a baby changing table, you have a choice between the open front changing table with storage baskets, which are very pretty, or a dresser-changing table combo.

The dresser is a much more practical option, both in terms of crawling babies and nursery storage. Try to find one with four drawers or more, or three drawers plus a side cupboard. (Watch the height of the table though. Waist height is best for comfortable changing.)

All baby changing tables should have a safety rail and safety straps attached. Use these EVERY time you change your baby.

Somewhere for all the used baby outfits -- A baby hamper.

Essential for keeping track of all those little baby clothes. Keeping them separate is a real time-saver if you do not wash the rest of your family laundry in the mild detergent recommended for babies.

If floor space is a concern, a laundry bag hung on the back of the nursery door works too.

Somewhere to keep feeding supplies and a lamp -- A nightstand or table.

The nursery lamp and nightlight stand here, close to the feeding chair. A nightstand is better, because it has drawers for baby's feeding items.

The night time hours are so much easier if you are comfortable and have everything you need, organized and close to hand.

Somewhere to sit and feed baby -- A nursery rocking chair or glider.

An absolute must for all those early morning nursing sessions. Money cannot buy the hours and hours of bonding time you will have here with your little one.

Make sure you try the rocker or glider before you buy it. You will regret a quick buy when you are sitting in the baby nursery at three in the morning and the chair is giving you a sore back.
