Cloth Diapers and the Working Mom

While checking Twitter today, I happened across a snip of conversation, presumably about whether or not a one should give cloth diapers a try. The tweet read something to the effect of, "I'd buy cloth, but I'm a working mom and too busy to consider them." Well, as a working mother it certainly made for interesting water cooler conversation today! All the same, I can understand the working mom's frustration: you put in 8-9 hours at a job, pick your baby up from daycare or the sitter, and the rest of the evening spent taking care of the little one and the rest of the family. Dinner, chores, maybe homework with the older children...and by the time you look up it's time for bed so you can wake up the next morning and do it all over again. Who wants to squeeze in "clean up dirty cloth diapers" into an already bursting schedule, when it seems so much more convenient to throw a disposable or two into the Diaper Genie and forget about it.

Yes, the green mother will argue that filling up a diaper pail with used Huggies day after day for the sake of convenience isn't doing Mother Nature any favors, and if one can handle heavy loads of laundry during the week, how would cloth diapers contribute to an avalanche? On the reserve side of the coin, there is the concern about soiled cloth diapers lingering in a pail before they reach the washer. The experienced cloth user will know the correct procedure for prepping soiled cloth diapers before they are laundered, but we can certainly understand how that is the last thing a harried working mom wants to think about in the precious minutes she has to herself.

So, how to solve the dilemma of daily dirty diapers? For us, it was just a matter of ensuring our diaper pails were sufficiently lined and enhanced with diaper pail deodorizers to keep the changing area fresh. For the investment made, it's worth the money to look into the special liners when you switch to cloth. The time it takes to change baby is no different than with a disposable - the only concern would be if a diaper is especially dirty, and even then it's maybe a few minutes in the bathroom shaking the excess over the toilet or pouring a cup of water over the pad for extra rinsing. Once properly stored, they should keep until your regular wash day.

So, if you're a working mother, don't think of cloth diapers as a hindrance. While disposables may seem convenient, it's possible to work cloth diapers into your busy schedule.

The Word of God is Truth, and the Truth will set you free. Freedom from fear, despair, suffering, and anxiety is the greatest gift you can get. It fills you with hope, love and faith which transforms into real Power..

Jesus is also called the Word of God. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with of God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1) He came to give beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord. (Isaiah 61:3) Furthermore, to those who believe in Him He gives the power to become the sons of God. (John 1:12)

That amazing power is not just for us to read about in the Bible. That kind of supernatural power is available to each and every one of us, every moment of every day! God's truth allows you to experience His grace and His power. So, instead of solving your problems by your own minute power, allow me to encourage you to reach out and tap into God's Power. Decorating in Preparation For Adoption

Most people redesigning a room to function as a nursery have a pretty good idea how much time they have to get the job done. With adoption, however, it could be days, months, or possibly even years - with little indication of the actual length of time involved. And when it DOES become clear, it is because it is happening NOW!

With such uncertainty, designing a nursery means doing more than basic color selections. It means designing a room that can serve another purpose until that special time comes and then quickly transform into a baby's haven. While this is a tall order, with a few strategies, it can be accomplished with a minimum of fuss.

When planning out the room, keep these principles in mind:

Use Multifunctional Furniture

Some furniture, like dressers and book cases, fit in a guest room as easily as a nursery. Others, like changing tables and cribs, are more specific. However, these need not be only changing tables and cribs. In many cases, manufacturers have designed versions of this furniture that, with some adjustment, lead double lives. Changing tables can be converted to dressers, desks or book stands and cribs can be converted into day beds or even full sized sleigh beds.

Focus on Accents for Decorations

If you paint balloons and pink elephants on your walls, your brother-in-law is not going to feel comfortable sleeping over. This does not mean, however, that you can't have a nicely decorated nursery when the baby comes. For instance, area rugs can be easily stored before and after changing the purpose of the room and, especially with neutral carpet or wooden floors, a variety can work equally well in the same room. You can have a basic black area rug initially and replace it with a blue rug or a pink area rug later on. Alternatively, a nice bamboo rug will fit in with both an adult rustic décor and a playful jungle nursery theme.

Wall pictures can be changed out easily too, as can covers and pillows for chairs and such. Also, while you won't be wallpapering the room at the last minute, adding wall stickers of balloons or stuffed animals can be a nice quick final touch.

Stay prepared for the change. Some things simply don't fit in a room that is not a nursery. A diaper genie can be dressed up as a trash can, but everyone will STILL know what it is. Similarly, bottle warmers, bouncy chairs and play pens are all out of place in a spare room and your guests will be distinctly uncomfortable if you leave a baby monitor on the night stand. This does not, however, mean you should not have uniquely nursery items available and waiting. It just means they must be out of sight or in storage until you need them.

With these or similar ideas as a part of your basic plan, there is no reason to feel intimidated by the idea of having a room that is ready at a moment's notice to go from stylish guest room to cute nursery.

2 Change the state of mind

When crying, change your baby's state of mind, such as talking in a different tone of voice, or through different faces. Try taking bubs into a different room or give them a different toy to play with. Try passing the baby from one parent to the other and walk around the room. The important thing is to change the babies state of mind, similar to a toddler who is crying from falling over and scraping their knee, you give them a lolly and it's amazing how quick they can stop crying.

3 Baroque music?

Baroque music has a beat that imitates the heart beat. Most baroque music is classical music. This is relaxing and is best played very softly as background music for the baby. While you may not enjoy Mozart, bubs may find it soothing.

4 Dim lights or leave light on

When it's time for sleep, some light may offer some peace of mind to baby rather than a pitch black room. Try a touch lamp on the lowest setting or a low watt globe. Perhaps leave a hallway light on until bubs falls asleep. It may only need to be on for five minutes.

5 Learning night and day

When feeding or changing baby at night time, help him or her distinguish the difference between day and night. Instead of turning the bright lights on in baby's room to feed or change, use the passage light or a dimmer light. This helps baby get back to sleep rather than them thinking its daylight and time to play. Also, if you have to talk to your baby keep your tone of voice low, use an unexciting voice, this will help settle baby to go back to sleep.

When our daughter was born she was confused with night and day but by keeping the lights dull and using different voices we were able to get her days and nights sorted rather quickly.
