Traveling With Babies

If you start baby travel slowly and plan wisely, both you and baby will enjoy first-class comfort. Begin with baby steps and you'll find that soon you and your little one will be able to walk, ride, or fly in the fast lane.

Day Trips

Crib And Changer

Introduce baby to travel starting with a few day-trips to a local relative or friend. Basic equipment will be a packed diaper bag, a stroller or pram (if you'll spend some time outdoors), and a car seat. Most modern car seats easily detach and convert into a baby carrier.

Be sure to pack your diaper bag with a diaper for each two hours you intend to be away from home. Pack 2 nipples for each bottle you pack, two to three receiving blankets, and an extra change of clothing for baby and an extra shirt for you. Cut down on diaper bag weight and keep things easy to find by using Ziploc bags to pack extras like nipples, wipes, and pacifiers. Pack one large, empty Ziploc for soiled items.

Overnights

For baby's first overnight trip, you'll need to extend your day-trip plan with a couple of extra receiving blankets and extra sets of clothing for baby. Even if your overnight trip is to Grandma's house, remember that nighttime sounds and perceptions may be different from those during daytime hours. A good pram with wheel locks can double as a bassinet, helping baby feel right at home and enabling everyone to sleep more comfortably through the night.

If overnight travel is a frequent part of your regular routine, consider investing in a Graco Pack 'n Play Classic Care Center. This excellent piece of baby travel equipment is a bassinet, changing table, and playpen in one portable unit that folds into a handy tote bag. There are 22 models of the Classic Care Center. With prices starting at under .00, you're sure to find one that's right for your little one and your budget.

Extended Hotel Stays

Many hotels stock products and equipment especially for travelers with babies, but they may not stock the brands you and baby prefer. When you make your reservation, ask for specific information on product brands and the equipment you'll need to make baby's stay comfortable. If you opt to use a hotel crib or bassinet, be sure to pack a couple of baby's own blankets, a familiar mobile, and/or other "security items".

Although your inclination may be to pack up your complete nursery, in some cases, an extended stay may allow you to pack even less than you would for an overnight trip. For instance, it would be impractical to pack a week's worth of bottles and nipples. Pack only enough for a day and leave time in your itinerary for clean-ups. When packing baby clothes, include two or three one-piece outfits that can be quickly hand washed when soiled.

You'll also want to be sure to bring along a stroller. Most contemporary strollers are lightweight and easily collapse for transport or storage. Some models are equipped with multi-position reclining seats so baby can sight-see or nap as he or she chooses. In addition, many have features like tray attachments, sun canopies, attached toy bars, and "parent" trays for your little extras.

If part of your vacation will put you in a crowd, consider a baby backpack or sling. The Baby Bjorn Carrier holds baby safely to your chest, increasing baby's sense of security as he maintains eye contact with your familiar face.

From day trips to cruise ships, how you travel with babies depends chiefly on your destination and length of stay. However developing a basic plan and adding to it as the situation warrants will quickly make seasoned travel companions out of you and your little one.

Newborn Baby Care For First Time Parents - The Absolute Essentials

Preparing for a newborn baby can be a daunting task even for seasoned parents, let alone first timers. It's hard to decide what baby care items you really need and whose advice is best to follow. What our parents and grandparents did may not coincide with the recommended procedures for babies today. One of the main differences you'll find is the recommendation for placing baby on his or her back when putting to sleep. SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, is a serious threat that should never be taken lightly. Not only must you always remember to put your baby on his back to sleep, but you must ALWAYS make sure that grandparents, great-grandparents and any caregiver knows this as well. You can never take it for granted that they automatically know that "back is best".

Crib And Changer

Newborn babies will spend the majority of their time sleeping and eating. For this reason, it is important that you help them to be safe while doing both. When sleeping your baby should be in a crib without any blankets, stuffed animals or toys. The mattress should be firm and should be covered with a tight fitting crib sheet. It's important to never over dress your baby or to prop baby up on pillows, etc. There are wearable blankets that you can put on your baby to keep him warm. Just be sure that it is not oversized.

Crib And Changer

Some first time parents are tempted to allow their baby to sleep in their beds or in car seats or bouncer seats, baby swings, etc. Beds are especially dangerous because of the potential for suffocation with pillows, blankets, the mattress itself or even you. Car seats, bouncer seats and swings have been known to cause damage to baby's spine and to cause SIDS related deaths because the immature airway is easily blocked off when baby slumps down in the seat. For this reason it's also extremely important to never leave your baby unattended in any baby swing, bouncer seat or car seat, ever.

In the first few days, you'll want to keep the nasal aspiration bulb that you received from the hospital wherever your baby is. If you can keep more than one around the house, that's even better. Often times the first day or two your baby will try to expel mucus and might be unable to do so his or herself. When that happens, you'll need to use the aspirator bulb to get the mucus out of the baby's mouth or throat. Be sure that you know how to do this before you leave the hospital. Do not assume that you will not need to use the bulb. Always keep the bulb beside the baby when he or she is in their car seat, swing, bouncer seat or crib. Wherever the baby goes, the bulb should go too. It's also good to keep an extra on the diaper changing table and in your diaper bag. Be sure that any caregiver also knows how to use the bulb.

Bathing a newborn is not usually recommended for a few days. Check with your baby's pediatrician to see when he or she recommends that you begin. Usually a little bit of warm water on a wash cloth is enough, especially in the first few weeks. You will not want to get the umbilical cord stump wet. Also be sure that you never leave a baby in or near water unattended. You should be within arms reach always. To care for the umbilical stump, use a Q-Tip dipped in alcohol and swab around the stump at every diaper change. Follow your baby's pediatrician's advice here as well.

You'll want to make sure that any visitors are not sick and that everyone washes their hands before holding or touching your baby. Illnesses such as RSV and the flu are especially dangerous for newborns with immature immune systems.

Also, never leave children or pets around a newborn baby even if you think you can trust them, not even for a second.

You'll want to keep an eye out, especially in the first several days for a yellowish tint in your baby's skin. If you notice anything like that, report it to your baby's pediatrician right away. It could indicate jaundice which can be easily remedied if caught early enough. Left untreated, jaundice can cause permanent damage to your baby's brain and even death. Also be sure to promptly report to your child's doctor any feeding problems, noisy or trouble breathing, and/or a fever over.

Do You Need Those New Clothes?

In the western world we have become a throwaway culture. But we need to ask some important questions rather than accepting this as part of modern life. Is it sustainable? On a purely practical note the processes and the chemicals involved in the bleaching, dying and other finishing stages of non organic textiles require that there be wise use to reduce the overall environmental impact. This involves the encouragement of cleaner production, prevention and minimization of waste, reuse and of course recycling. The main environmental impacts arise from the intensive energy consumption at all stages of growing and production and the quantities of chemicals and water used.

Crib And Changer

Are we willing to take responsibility for the fact that the cheap goods that we enjoy are paid for in other cultures with below minimum wages, lack of union representation and forced child labour. You may answer that this is nothing to do with us and should be dealt with in those countries involved but it is not so simple as that.,

Crib And Changer

An interesting article in the Saturday telegraph magazine highlighted these issues. Whilst many major chain stores in the UK are now selling organic cotton garments and vaunting that they are adhering to ethical standards in factories; workers are still being paid a minimum wage. This is because those same retailers are reluctant to raise their prices to consumers in order to pay a living wage to workers in the third world. As a result we as consumers are encouraged to buy garments that we do not need and they often remain unworn. How many of us can honestly say that we do not have at least one draw full of unwanted and scarcely worn clothes. I am ashamed to say that I cannot but I am making efforts to reform.

Babies and small children grow out of their clothes very fast so we do need to consider how we can recycle textiles. I would certainly advocate buying organic cotton and other organic textiles but we need to look at ways of ensuring that clothing is well utilized and enjoyed. One obvious way is to pass clothes through the family . Otherwise take outgrown clothes to charity shops. I have recently heard it suggested that we should rent out children's clothes to ensure maximum use. I am not sure how this would work on a commercial basis but perhaps I am missing out on a terrific opportunity. There are a multitude of mother and baby clubs and groups out there so it should certainly be possible to arrange something on a local basis and if it became a norm it would be widely accepted.

We need to change our expectations and stop being slaves to fashion and consumerism. If retailers priced their clothes more realistically we would be forced to learn to be thrifty and use the clothes we buy to their full potential. It is not idle comment to say that we cannot continue to dissipate the world's resources as we are currently doing. We have used more goods and services since 1950 than in the rest of human history. A sobering thought I think.

Finding The Best Way To Furnish Your Baby's Bedroom

The addition of a new baby into the family is a wonderful occasion but it is also a time for change and in many cases upheaval. Before the birth of the baby so many things need to be organised and be ready in time for the birth. One major job that always needs preparing is the baby's bedroom.

    Crib And Changer

As long as you know the gender of your baby before the birth you can start to prepare the bedroom weeks or months in advance of the birth. A new baby's bedroom doesn't have to be anything too fancy as the baby won't have to impress anybody; the most important thing is for the bedroom to contain good practical furniture and items that you will need on a daily basis for your baby as well as items of convenience. Items such as clothes drawers, a small wardrobe, a crib and a set of storage shelves will generally be enough in the room both to make the room look full as well serve as a practical place to look after your baby.

    Crib And Changer

Where furniture is concerned for your baby's room the choice can be quite simple alternatively you can go as extravagant as you please, most design houses now provide ranges of baby furniture that would grace many a penthouse suite. Practicality really has to be the key for any parent when furnishing the baby's room. No matter how wonderful the furniture looks if a parent cannot keep clothes and baby sundries organised and to hand when preparing the baby then extra work and stress will be created, which is not good.

You can allow yourself to indulge in certain items of luxury baby furniture to improve the look of the room as the practicality of certain pieces would be the same regardless of the quality. One such item of furniture would be the baby's crib. These are available in many designs and it is possible to find a style to suit most types of interior décor. Pieces of furniture tend to fall into the category of fashion furniture as certain styles do go in and out of fashion with frequent regularity but many of the older more traditional styles will probably be available for ever. The old nursery type crib which is rectangular in shape with wooden side fence rails is the ultimate old nursery style crib is probably still to this day the most popular style but it is now possible to get cribs that although are still as practical as the older style versions can just add a little bit more style to a room. One of the more popular "new" style cribs is round in shape and hence doesn't pen the baby in so much as he or she is free to roll around in any direction without banging into the sides of the crib. This style also offers the parents more accessibility when getting the infant out of the crib.

If you would prefer to stick with the more traditional style of crib it is still possible to freshen up the look of a baby's bedroom by adding a few other touches that can make subtle little differences to the overall look of the room. The bedding that you put onto the crib is one such thing. Baby crib bedding comes in many different materials and styles, from standard cotton to organic bamboo fibre as well as a hundred different materials and styles. Sometimes it might be pay to be prudent with the bedding for your babies crib as not babies adapt to sleeping with a different type of material than they are already used to. Unfortunately it may be a case of trial and error before you can find a bedding type for your baby's crib that suits everybody.

Five Reasons Why A Play Yard Mattresses Is Necessary

Making babies happy and contented is many parents' desire. Fortunately, children are easy to make happy than adults. They do not even need expensive gifts. All they need is proper feeding, play and rest. Even so, fulfilling these needs can in fact be somewhat difficult. All the same, play can make your baby happy. All you have to do is buying the right play yard mattress. This will help you take the baby outside the house occasionally.

    Crib And Changer

During summer, you should give your babies most of your free time. If your worry is their safety, simply buy a sturdy mattress. It will prevent your children from bruising their skin as they play. This item comes with a play yard, which is a crib with mesh sides and could have a cover. For infants, choose a style with a covering to shield them from excess heat.

    Crib And Changer

You have to concentrate more on the mattress, as your baby could lie on it any time. If your child is bigger, you can expect him or her to put relatively high pressure on the play yard mattress. This is precisely the reason why it has to be strong and durable. Do you still have doubts? The following are reasons why this mattress style is imperative.

Portability - yard mattresses and accessories are easy to carry to whatever places you desire. You can assemble them fast and place them in your car. This kit is necessary for families that love to have outdoor fun. During travel, one should simply place them inside their storage bags. User-friendly - Mothers or nannies do not need any training at all. A play yard mattress and its accessories are extremely easy to use. They come in many different designs, colors and sizes, but they are user-friendly. Keeps babies safe and comfortable - babies that can crawl, step or walk can be very unsafe outdoors. This is why you need a containment area, such as a play yard. It prevents them from wandering and hurting their skins in the process. The equipment is for babies who weigh up to thirty-five pounds. It is versatile - You can attend to your baby fully on this yard mattress. For instance, you could feed, change diapers, play and woo your baby to sleep. Now you can buy some additions, such as changing tables as long as you can attach them to the crib. This item is very reliable and fun to use. Readily available and affordable - If you have never thought of purchasing a play yard kit, now is your chance. Mainly, you will have to use the Internet to find a wide range of products. To know which ones to pick or ignore, take your time to read product reviews. First, you could discover the best brands available. In addition, you can find out the best mattresses and accessories that your favorite brand sells. If your worry is prices, do not rush the buying process. Some trustworthy baby product websites have cheap play yard mattress styles.

Getting Ready For Baby - A Newborn Checklist

Having everything you need for baby ready to go before you bring your newborn home is a wise thing for a new parent to do. But what to get for a newborn baby?

    Crib And Changer

Keep in mind that you never really need as much as you think you will. Be realistic. Do you really need a bottle warmer? If you're a parent who can afford it and you want it even if you don't need it, then go for it. Just know that in a few months you're probably going to be reselling it because you've realized that some things are more trouble than they're worth.

    Crib And Changer

I advise having the nursery set up, with supplies in place, clothes washed and ready to go, three to four weeks before your due date. That way, even if your baby comes early, you'll be prepared. It's so much easier to come home from the hospital when you know you've got everything you need on hand.

Below is a list of the essential must haves for your baby's comfort and safety.

    ESSENTIAL EQUIPMENT

    • Bassinet, Co-Sleeper/Crib or a Pack and Play for your bedroom.
For the first 12 weeks, you'll be feeding your baby every 2 to 4 hours so having him in your room will help keep you from having to shuffle back and forth to the nursery. It 's also nice for keeping your baby cuddled up and close by. Your newborn has just come from a compact space, so they like to feel snug. I recommend using the bassinet instead of the crib until your baby can turn over or there is no longer room for him to stretch. You'll only need it in the early months, but you'll be really happy to have it!

    Crib and Mattress
When your baby outgrows the bassinet it's time for a crib. Be sure to buy one that meets current safety standards and make sure that the mattress fits snugly against the sides so that baby can't wiggle or get wedged under.

    • Baby sling

Every mom I know SWEARS by a sling or some type of carrier. It allows you to be mobile and still keep your baby physically connected to you. Be sure it provides proper neck and head support, and is made of a washable fabric. It should feel comfortable on you and permit you to carry your baby facing in or out. In the beginning, you'll want to have her facing in. As she gets older, she'll want to face out so she can see the world.

    • Changing mat
This is a plastic pad that you put down in order to change your baby. You can put a towel on top or use a cover so your baby won't feel the cold plastic. If you have the budget, you an also purchase a changing table, although it's really not a necessity. The amount of time you will use it is very short.

    • Infant Carrier/Car Seat/Stroller

I'm a big fan of the 'system'. It's a carrier that connects to the car and stroller attachments. They make it so much easier for you and the baby to go from home to car and to stroller. Be sure to get your car seat inspected or installed at the hospital where you will be delivering. You will not be able to leave the hospital with your newborn without a proper car seat so have this installed 1-week before your due date if you can.

    • High Chair
You won't need a high chair until your baby is at least 5-6 months old so you might want to hold off on this purchase for awhile.

    • Baby Bumbo Sitter

Once your baby is about 3 months old and has some neck control, this is great! They can sit it in it for everything.

    • Baby Bath Tub
It's important to start off with a small bath tub because in a small space with just a little bit of water, you gain confidence in how to hold and handle your baby. I love those that have the sling because until about 3 or 4 months old they don't have any neck control. The sling helps you keep them in place.

    • Bouncy/vibrating seat and/or swing

Having somewhere safe to put your infant while you cook or get dressed is vital and babies love the motion they provide.

    OTHER EQUIPMENT TO CONSIDER

    • Large comfortable rocking chair

    • Sound Machine - These are great for helping to soothe your baby. They play sounds from the mothers womb, water sounds, sounds from nature etc. They even come inside of soft stuffed animals.

    • Baby Monitoring System - There are many options out there now including video monitoring systems so you can see the baby in his or her crib. Dual monitors or multiple monitors are a must if you have multiple levels in your home or your master bedroom is on a different level altogether. There are also remote pager systems so you can clip it on and listen as you go room to room.

    • Breast Pump & Accessories

    • Nursing Pillows - I like the Boppy. It can be used by the baby too, so it serves multiple purposes. The Brest Friend, however provides good support and leverage and has a strap you can tie around you if you need to be mobile. It also has a pouch that zips to put things in.

    • CD Player with Head Phones and Audio Books - For you when you're up in the night with the baby

    • Baby Car Mirror - Since kids are rear-facing until they are about a year old and/or 20+ lbs., I love this. It allows you to see your baby through your rearview mirror. Some of them will even entertain your baby with lights and songs.

    • Activity Mat or Baby Gym/ crib mobile - If you get a mobile for the crib or pack n play, make sure it's colorful and musical. The same goes for activity mats. Be sure the toys include mirrors and sounds.

    ESSENTIAL LINENS

I highly recommend all cotton. It's soft and can be washed in hot water to sterilize. Everything should be washed with a mild detergent, like Dreft, before coming in contact with your baby. During the first six months, wash babies clothes separately from the other laundry. The baby's bedding should keep your newborn comfortable and safe. Use only quality, breathable materials and avoid fluffy things until your baby is able to move items like blankets from his/her face.

    • 3 stretch cotton-fitted sheets for the bassinet, and later for the crib
    • 4 cotton blankets that can be used for swaddling
    • 3 warmer blankets
    • 2 mattress pads
    • Lots of burp cloths (cloth diapers) that can be used for wiping up spit up and all kinds of messes
    • 2 Hooded towels and washcloths

    ESSENTIAL CLOTHING

When it comes to babies clothing, it's all about layers. One key thing to know is that babies can't regulate their temperature very well until they're about six moths old. It's very easy for them to get overheated or too cold. It's up to you to keep the temperature right through layering of clothes and the use of blankets.

Think about the practicality and ease of dressing. Make sure the crotch opens easily for diaper changing. Soft and easy to change outfits are recommended since you will probably be changing your baby several times a day.

    • 4-6 sleepers
    • 5-7 one piece garments
    • 3-4 gowns/kimonos
    • 5-7 comfortable day outfits
    • 8-10 undershirts
    • 3-4 bibs
    • 4-5 pairs of socks or booties
    • 3 cotton caps/hats
    • 2 sweaters if it's winter
    • 1 snowsuit or fleece if it's winter

Optional - A sleep sack. These are making their way over from Europe -- they're a brilliant way to keep baby warm at night without blankets, which baby can kick off. It's like a sleeping bag, but it has open arms for ventilation and a zippered bottom so diaper changes are still easy.

    ESSENTIAL SUPPLIES

    • Diapers - Your baby will go through roughly five thousand diapers before he's potty trained! And in the early days you may be changing your baby up to 12 times a day. Whether you plan to use disposables, recycled, cloth or a diaper service, be sure to have plenty on hand.
    • Diaper wipes - I like the unscented ones for the first several months
    • Diaper Bag - Get a nice durable bag with large pockets and make sure that it always has:
    • 4-5 Diapers
    • Diaper wipes
    • Cloth diaper/ burp cloths for cleaning up spit up and spills

    Picking the Perfect Crib

The most important piece of furniture you can buy for your nursery is the crib. The crib should be the main focal point of your nursery and you should not pay more on any other piece of furniture than you do on your crib. Before you actually pay for a crib, it is important to think about the type of look you're going for in the room so it all ties together.

    Crib And Changer

If you're into a more antique look, a Jenny Lind crib would be the perfect match for your nursery. Known as the Swedish Nightingale, Jenny Lind was a famous opera singer who traveled with the Barnum and Bailey's circus. The crib style was named after her because she was known for only sleeping in beds with turned legs. Jenny Lind cribs are recognized for being modern but still having an old world touch.

    Crib And Changer

Although Jenny Lind cribs can be very beautiful, you may be interested in buying a more convenient and functional crib for your baby. A three-in-one crib allows the crib to change size as a child grows, saving time and money in the future. Changing from a crib to a bed, the piece can adjust as your child gets older.

Some parents have discovered cribs that help them to handle cranky baby situations by offering a remote that controls features like lights, sounds and motions. Helping to distract your baby, you can use the remote to select these features and help entertain or put your baby to sleep. One button might turn on a mobile, another may play music and a third could even trigger crib vibrations and rock your child to sleep. These cribs also come in handy for early morning disturbances.

The most important thing to think about when choosing a crib is the safety of the model. Before buying a new crib, check out the consumer reports to research the history of the crib and if you're purchasing a used crib, test everything yourself, making sure that it is strong, sturdy and suitable for your child.

Keeping Your Baby's Head the Perfect Shape - Avoiding Plagiocephaly

Plagiocephaly refers to an asymmetric head shape. The term comes from Greek - oblique head.

    Crib And Changer

Usually there is flattening of one area of back of the head causing a flat spot on the head. The condition is also referred to as positional plagiocephaly or deformational plagiocephaly. Pediatricians have seen increasing numbers of babies referred to them with plagiocephaly since the 1990's, coinciding with advice for babies to sleep on their backs.

    Crib And Changer

The advice for babies to sleep on their backs is sound and research has shown that it is the
safest sleep position for babies with the lowest risk of sudden infant death syndrome (crib
or cot death syndrome) associated with it. Always put your baby to sleep on his/her back.

Babies don't get plagiocephaly from being put on their backs to sleep but from spending
extended periods lying on their backs, particularly if they always tend to lie looking to
one side. This can occur because:
there is already a flat spot on the head present at birth and the baby's head then always seems to rest on that flat spot. The baby's head is molded in the uterus before birth and this can lead to one area of the back of the head being slightly flat. there is a tight muscle in the neck (the sternomastoid muscle) - this is called torticollis. The tightness in the muscle means the baby's head tends to look to one side. all the interesting things for the baby to look at are on one side of the room and so the baby always looks to one side. Nobody likes looking at a blank wall.

Whatever your baby's head shape at birth, the body will naturally reshape it to a symmetric
shape if it can. However, the bones of the skull are still relatively soft and malleable for
a few months, particularly if your baby was born prematurely, and if the head is always
lying on the same spot, things will get worse and the head shape will become more asymmetric
over time. The flat spot on the head needs some space, not pressure, to be able to remold.

There are steps you can take to keep your baby's head shape symmetrical:
When you put your baby to sleep on his/her back, alternate the side his/her head lies on. Some mothers put a picture on the side of the crib (cot) and change this from side to side at each sleep time (to remind them which side to put the baby's head to sleep and to give the baby something to look at). When your baby is awake and you can watch him/her, give him/her supervised "tummy time". Do not let your baby spend too long on his/her back if he/she is not sleeping. Do not let your baby spend too long in car seats if he/she is not traveling. When your baby is on his/her back, make sure you alternate where all the interesting things to look at are. You might want to turn the crib (cot) around at each sleep or change the end you put your baby's head to make sure your baby doesn't get in the habit of always looking one way. if your baby was born with a flat spot, make sure he/she doesn't always rest on it. A small bolster under the flat spot so the pressure is taken by the other side of the head can be used. Make sure the bolster is small and not something your baby could suffocate on.

Supervised "tummy time" is very important for babies. Not only does it mean there is no
pressure on the head but it develops tone in your baby's trunk muscles which is important
for his/her later development. It is important that "tummy time" is supervised and you don't
let your baby fall asleep on his/her tummy.

Start putting your baby on his/her tummy early to get him/her used to it. Start by putting your baby on his/her tummy on your chest so he/she can see your face. When you start to put your baby on the floor, get down on the floor with your baby so he/she sees your face. Try to have at least 5-10 minutes of "tummy time" per day.

Sometimes babies have a tight muscle in the neck, which is called torticollis. There are
several causes of a tight muscle in the neck, but the important thing is to give gentle
stretching exercises to the muscle to prevent it shortening and tightening further. If there
is torticollis, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises the following exercises at each
    nappy change:
Holding one hand on your baby's chest, gently turn the head to one side and hold for a count of 10 (turn the head so the chin goes towards the shoulder). Repeat on the other side. Now do that 2 more times on each side (so 3 times in all). Holding one hand on your baby's chest, gently lean the head to one side and hold for a count of 10 (lean the ear towards the shoulder). Repeat on the other side. Now do that 2 more times on each side (so 3 times in all)..li>

Remember, these stretches are gentle - never force your baby's head. If these simple
measures don't help, you may need the extra help of a physiotherapist.

So, by careful positioning of your baby and avoiding extended periods when your baby is on
his/her back, you can preserve his/her head shape and avoid plagiocephaly.

From Crib to Toddler Beds - How to Ease Your Toddler's Switching Bed Anxieties

It's a big deal for a child to switch from his beloved crib to a bigger bed. No wonder toddler beds are designed to catch their fancy! Saying goodbye to the good old crib can trigger unpleasant bouts of caterwauling at bedtime.

    Crib And Changer

How to Make the Transition Easy

    Crib And Changer

The crib is the most comfortable spot in the house for baby - everything in it, including the lumpy blanket, which must not be washed - are his favorite things. Any change or a missing something spells disasters; can you imagine what it would be like to get rid of the crib and hustle your kid to one of those unimaginative toddler beds? This would instantly trigger a tsunami of protests.

Easy does not do it. Before you plop him on his new but bigger bed, there are things you must know - kids won't budge if they have not been primed for the eventual change. Those cute toddler beds may be tantalizing to you, but for your child, it means sleeping away from mom and dad, and going without the familiar sight and smells of his beloved crib.

He may not sleep on the big bed the first night but sleep between mom and dad; the second night he may still struggle and opt to sleep on the floor; eventually he'll decide the new big bed might be more comfortable.

    Toddler Beds and Bedtime Routines

The first night he decides to take to the new bed, your problems aren't solved yet. Expect those some mommy and daddy SOS during the night. As much as you'd want to rush to him, stay put but you may want to check if he has been wakened by a bad dream or he is not feeling well.

Part of transition period is establishing a bedtime routine. No matter how much you're itching to watch CSI or 48 Hours, you have to stick to the set schedule. Bedtime routine starts with the bath after dinner, a glass of warm milk, and a bedtime story. He may want you to stay with him for some cuddling - but be firm when it's time for him to sleep.

Make your child feel safe in his room. Although those toddler beds are adorable, your son will still want his lumpy blanket and stuffed toys. These familiar things can calm his anxieties. Never force a child to sleep on his new bed but be persistent with the bedtime routine.

Each night until he becomes accustomed to his new bed and the idea of sleeping in his own room, entertain him with bedtime stories on his new bed. Eventually, the big night will come when he'll nod to sleep in the new big bed.

Keeping Your Child Safe in His Room

Toddler beds have been designed with the child's safety in mind. But upon assembling the whole thing in your room, make sure all nuts and bolts are properly installed. Apart from the bed, check other children's furniture; is the bookshelf stable? Are electrical outlets covered? Are small toys lying around? Children love to poke and put things into their mouths while exploring their rooms, so beware.

Install a night light in the child's room to keep the "creeping monsters" away. The younger the child is the brighter the light he demands. Well, the night light can show him what a delight toddler beds can be.

When You KNOW You Need a New Mattress

It can be easy to put off buying a new mattress. Sometimes you get used to your own one and think that you would rather not spend the money on a new bed. But actually it is a good idea to invest in a new mattress every once in a while to continue to sleep soundly and comfortably. So what signs should you look out for that might be telling you its time to get a new one?

    Crib And Changer

Constantly Waking Up in the Night

    Crib And Changer

You go to bed on time, the house is quiet and you feel tired. But for some reason you keep waking up during the night. It can be a real mystery sometimes as to why you cannot sleep through the night, and it can be due to a range of reasons.

However, it could well be that your bed is actually preventing you from sleeping properly because it is not providing the support it should, and this means it could be time to get a new mattress like a Sealy mattress or a Miracoil mattress.

    Unexplained Aches and Pains

If you wake up in the morning with a bad neck, back or arm, and you know that you did not fall from the bed and you went to bed feeling fine, it could be that the support has gone from your mattress over the years. If you have a cheap mattress then this can happen sooner, and it can really start to bother you over time meaning it is time to buy a new mattress, perhaps from a well-known brand like Sealy.

    Takes Hours to Fall Asleep

No one likes tossing and turning and not being able to fall asleep, especially when you are tired. This can happen with an old mattress, and sometimes it just never seems to get comfortable. This can be very frustrating, and could be your mattress's way of saying that you need a change.

    Feeling Lethargic During the Day

If you are feeling tired and lethargic then it could be due to a range of problems, including health problems. But it may simply be that you are not getting the sleep you need. Perhaps you don't realise during the night how badly you are sleeping, and a change of mattress to a Silentnight mattress or something similar might well be in order.

    Conclusion

Always Sleep on the Best Mattress

A good mattress can be an expensive investment, but it is one that you should seriously consider making. A quality mattress like a Sealy mattress is essential for your quality of life, and it is always a good idea to buy the best you can afford and to never put off buying a new mattress because of the price.

    Different Types Of Cribs Info

Cribs for new infants are very essential for their safety and you can choose one from the different kinds of cribs available in the department stores. In choosing, you have to consider one thing which is important and it is the protection of your baby and not the design of the crib.

    Crib And Changer

If you wish to buy a second hand crib, you have to be sure that the crib is slightly used and is just some years old only. You have to check with the security guides in order to ensure that the slightly used crib matches to modern safety standards. The different kinds of available cribs must be able to help match to the majority of nursery needs.

    Crib And Changer

If ever you want to evade substituting the crib into a bed in some years, you might desire to look for convertible crib. These cribs have the capacity to switch later beds for kids, and then later on into couch kind of beds. Convertible beds are advantageous to use because your kid will be capable to maintain his/her bed or crib for many years in the future.

This will be beneficial because several kids are truly attached to single beds. The disadvantage of convertible beds includes blunt expense; they may cost more than five hundred US dollars. Portable cribs are recommended if you only have a little place wherein to put your baby crib. Portable cribs are generally smaller as compared to standard cribs although this will means that you will have to replace the crib or bed earlier.

They are less costly, because the cost is only more or less one hundred US dollars and they are also very fine if you want to travel because they are easy to pack and you can fold them also. Plenty of people choose style rather than portability and they enjoy diverse kinds of beds having round shape or those beds that feature covering for shelter. Shelter cribs look like the typical rectangular cribs; however, they have canopies overhead.

You must have to purchase canopy covers specifically for the frame on top, and several people are worried about filth or dirt that may be ensnared in the overhead canopy. You may prevent this by ensuring that you will change regularly the covering for shelter. The round cribs have become significantly popular in current years, and they are considered extravagant cribs for babies. Most of them cost around one thousand US dollars or even more. Beddings are generally more costly too. Although these are beautiful cribs, have to pay for the opportunity of possessing one.

Lastly, of the diverse types of baby cribs, the most well-liked by majority of parents are the usual rectangular crib. This is a simple type of crib which several people are familiar. There may be variants in types of wood utilized, features and several little elements of design. Rectangular baby cribs tend to be accessible in the biggest selection and cost range, and simple bedcovers for these beds tend to be the simplest to find and reasonable in price.
